Send invoices, track expenses, reconcile banks and prepare VAT returns for Dutch small businesses.

Why Moneybird

Moneybird is cloud-based accounting and invoicing software for freelancers and small businesses in the Netherlands and Belgium. It handles invoicing, expenses, bank reconciliation, purchase-invoice processing and VAT return preparation tailored to Dutch tax rules. The platform covers the everyday financial administration most small companies need, with EUR as the core currency.

Best for
Freelancers and small businesses in the Netherlands and Belgium who want simple online invoicing, bookkeeping and VAT returns they can mostly handle themselves, with an accountant on access when needed.

What it does

Moneybird is online accounting software for entrepreneurs. It covers sales invoices and quotes, purchase invoices, time tracking, bookkeeping and VAT returns, which you can submit to the tax authorities directly from Moneybird. It also takes online payments, with options such as iDEAL, QR code, direct debit and credit card, and has a payment page for selling products, services or subscriptions.

There is a mobile app for invoicing on the go. The vendor says more than 400,000 entrepreneurs use it, and the site is available in English, Dutch, German and French for Belgium.

Why you would need it

Admin for a small business is a time trap. Invoices go out late, purchase receipts pile up, and VAT season means a weekend of matching bank lines. The pain shows up when you chase payments by hand and you cannot say at any time what you owe.

Moneybird automates the repeatable parts: it creates and sends invoices, processes documents and bank transactions, and prepares the VAT return. What changes is that bookkeeping becomes a short routine instead of a quarterly project.

Where it fits

Moneybird sits at the end of your sales process. Deals, orders and timesheets feed it. It feeds your accountant, the tax return and your cash overview. Moneybird does not build integrations itself, but its open API lets third parties do it, and webshop and payment connections exist for platforms such as Shopify, WooCommerce, Mollie, Stripe and PayPal.

It replaces spreadsheets and manual invoice templates. For larger or more complex bookkeeping, Exact Online and Twinfield are the usual Dutch options.

What stands out

  • A Dutch tax focus, including VAT returns filed from the product.
  • A well-documented REST API on every plan, with sandbox administrations for testing, webhooks, a command-line tool and an official MCP server.
  • Online payments and subscriptions in the same product as the invoices.
  • Time tracking that feeds invoices, which suits freelancers and small agencies.

My take

I'd pick Moneybird for a Dutch freelancer or small company that wants the simplest route to clean invoices and a prepared VAT return. The product is built around that job, and it shows.

What I'd watch is scope. It is not for multi-entity reporting, heavy inventory or complex international accounting. Also check how the plan limits processed bank transactions, because that is the number that grows with your business. If you are outside the Netherlands and Belgium, test whether the tax features fit your country.

Verdict

Pick Moneybird if you run a small Dutch or Belgian business and want invoicing, bookkeeping and VAT in one simple product. Skip it if you need multi-entity accounting or an international setup. A larger accounting package will serve you better.

Before you choose

Plans are limited by bank transactions

The plans differ mainly in how many bank transactions you can process, and the smallest plans also limit invoices. Check your real monthly volume before you choose. There is no free plan, but there is a 60-day trial with access to the Complete plan.

Built around Dutch rules

VAT returns, banks and payment methods such as iDEAL are Dutch. If you mostly work abroad, check that the features you need exist for your country. Ask your accountant whether they accept Moneybird exports.

Integrations come from third parties

Moneybird says it does not develop integrations itself. Webshop, payment and CRM connections are built by partners on top of the open API. Before you buy, check that the connector for your shop or payment provider exists and who maintains it.

Compare the alternatives

Exact Online and Twinfield suit more complex bookkeeping or accountant-led setups. For subscription billing, look at Chargebee and for payments Stripe. Moneybird wins on simplicity.
