Moneybird vs Stripe

Moneybird logovsStripe logo
Moneybird records invoices and VAT for a Dutch small business. Stripe takes the payment and runs subscriptions through code. One keeps the books, the other collects the money.

The verdict

If you send invoices to business clients who pay by bank transfer or iDEAL, I'd pick Moneybird and skip Stripe. Moneybird takes online payments itself, including iDEAL, QR code, direct debit and card. If you sell software or online products and want payments and subscriptions built into your product, I'd pick Stripe, with an accounting tool such as Moneybird behind it.

The question to ask is whether you need to take payments inside your own product or website. If not, you probably do not need Stripe yet. If so, you will still need books, and Stripe does not replace them. Check which connector links Stripe to Moneybird and who maintains it.

Who each is for

Moneybird logo

Choose Moneybird if…

Pick Moneybird if your business is mostly invoices, quotes, purchase receipts and a VAT return. It suits Dutch and Belgian freelancers, agencies and small companies that want simple bookkeeping they can mostly run themselves.

It can take online payments and offers a payment page for products, services or subscriptions, so a simple business may never need a separate payment provider. Time tracking feeds invoices, which helps if you bill hours.

Moneybird has an open API and an official MCP server, but it does not build integrations itself. Partners do. Before you buy, check that the connector for your shop or payment provider exists. Skip it if you need multi-entity or international accounting.

Stripe logo

Choose Stripe if…

Pick Stripe if you sell software or online products and have a developer, or access to one. The API is well documented, there are webhooks, a command-line tool and an official MCP server, and most tools in your stack already integrate with it.

It grows with you, from a first payment link to subscriptions, tax and fraud tools on the same account. There is no plan fee, but you pay per transaction, and add-ons such as billing, tax and reporting are priced separately.

Skip it if you are a non-technical founder with simple invoicing needs, because anything custom needs engineering time. Remember that once billing, tax and reporting sit in Stripe, moving away is slow.
