Web search with citations

What it is
Web search with citations means the AI can look things up on the internet while it answers and then shows which pages it used, usually as links beside each statement. This differs from a model that answers only from what it learned in training, which may be out of date. Anthropic API, Botpress, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot Studio, NotebookLM, Perplexity and Relevance AI are listed with this feature.
Why it matters
Questions about competitors, prices, news, regulations or recent product changes need current facts. Citations let you check where a claim came from before you repeat it to a client or put it in a report, which matters because AI answers can be wrong. You need this for research and market monitoring. For work based on your own documents, or for writing that needs no fresh facts, it adds little.
What to check
- Ask whether search is switched on by default or must be enabled, and whether it can be turned off.
- Test with a question about something that changed recently and open the cited links to confirm they support the answer.
- Check whether you can restrict the search to certain websites or exclude others.
- Find out whether searches count against a usage limit or cost extra.
