Why Perplexity

Perplexity is an AI answer engine that synthesises live web search results into clear, cited answers to natural-language questions. It offers a minimalist interface ideal for quick research and fact-finding without navigating multiple search results. Available for individuals and teams as consumer plans or enterprise deployment.

Best for
Founders and small teams who research markets, competitors and facts every week and want fast, source-cited answers from live web data instead of ten links to open one by one.

What it does

Perplexity is an AI answer engine. You ask a question in plain language, it searches the live web and writes a short answer with citations that point to the sources it used. The interface looks more like a search box than a chat window.

The same company also sells an API for developers. The documentation lists an Agent API for web-grounded answers with built-in citations, a Search API that returns ranked raw results, an Embeddings API and a Router API for open-weight models.

Why you would need it

You feel the pain when you are about to publish a claim, answer a prospect's question or check what a competitor just launched, and a normal search gives you a page of links. You open six tabs, skim them, and still do not know which one to trust. A cited answer gets you to the right two sources in a minute.

A chat assistant without live search has the opposite problem. It answers fluently and may be out of date. Perplexity shows where the answer came from, so you can check it before you rely on it.

Where it fits

Perplexity sits at the start of research. It feeds the notes in Notion, the brief you hand to a writer and the draft you refine in ChatGPT or Claude. It replaces the first rounds of searching, not the reading that follows.

Through its API and MCP server it can also sit inside other tools, so an agent can look something up on the web in the middle of a task.

What stands out

  • Cited answers. Every answer links to its sources, which makes checking quick.
  • Live web access. Answers use current information, not only what a model learned in training.
  • One company, several surfaces. There is the answer engine itself, an API with four parts and a command line tool listed in the docs.
  • An official MCP server. It is hosted by Perplexity and exposes search, ask, research and reason tools to any MCP client.

My take

I have been using ChatGPT for a while, and I looked at Perplexity because I keep an eye on how the AI assistants compare, for my own work and for clients. What I liked was the simplicity. It is easy to use, even for non-technical people, and it is good at short research questions.

My earlier impression was that the depth of its answers falls short of the strongest general assistants for complex analysis. Treat that as a reason to test it on your own questions, because these products change quickly. I would use it for the fact-finding step and move to a deeper assistant for the thinking.

Verdict

Pick Perplexity when you research often and want answers you can verify fast, for competitive checks, market facts and pre-publication fact checking. Skip it if you rarely research, or if you mostly need long, nuanced analysis of your own documents. A general assistant such as ChatGPT or Claude suits that better.

Before you choose

Cited does not mean correct

A citation tells you where the answer came from. It does not tell you the source is right. Open the sources that matter before you quote them, especially numbers and dates.

Depth for complex work

In my earlier assessment, answers were fine for quick questions and thinner for deep analysis. If your work needs long reasoning over your own material, compare it with ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or NotebookLM.

Plans and limits are not clear from outside

Check the plan page for search limits and file uploads before you rely on it for daily work. The API is billed per token, according to the developer docs.

A standalone tool

Perplexity is not built around your CRM or your task manager. You carry the result into other tools yourself, or you wire it in through the API or MCP.
