ChatGPT
Why ChatGPT
ChatGPT is a conversational AI assistant from OpenAI, available via web and desktop apps for text generation, web search with citations, document analysis, image generation and coding tasks. It serves individuals and teams using AI for knowledge work and research across free and paid subscription tiers.
What it does
ChatGPT is OpenAI's AI assistant. You chat with it on the web, in desktop and mobile apps, and it writes, summarises, researches with web search, analyses documents and files, generates images and helps with code. Paid plans add more usage, more capable models, scheduled tasks, connectors to other apps and, on business plans, workspace controls.
Why you would need it
Most knowledge work starts with a blank page or a pile of text. Drafting an email, summarising a long thread, structuring a plan, cleaning a spreadsheet. A good assistant takes the first pass so you spend your time on judgement.
The pain is felt when the same kind of task eats an hour every day: write-ups, research, reports, replies. This is where an assistant pays for itself.
Where it fits
ChatGPT sits next to your tools, not inside one. You paste or upload in, and you copy or connect out. It replaces a lot of searching, first drafts and note tidying. Through connectors and the API, it can also read from and write to other systems, which moves it from a chat box towards a worker.
You should compare it with Claude and Gemini, which do much of the same.
What stands out
- Wide coverage: text, images, voice, files, web search and code in one place.
- Plans for individuals and for teams, with admin controls and no training on business data by default.
- A developer API with tools, MCP support and webhooks, for building your own workflows.
- Scheduled tasks and connectors on paid plans, which let it do repeat work.
My take
I use ChatGPT daily on the Pro plan. It works as a second brain for me: I keep my business documentation, email templates, meeting notes and preferences in it, so I can recall details, get summaries of earlier work and draft new material with that context. I also use it as an operator for repeat tasks such as replies, reports and marketing copy. It feels like an intern that never stops.
What I would watch is accuracy. It still gets niche topics wrong with confidence, so I check facts that matter. The top plan is also a real cost, so I would only pay for it if you use it all day.
Verdict
Pick ChatGPT if you want one assistant for most of your knowledge work and you will use it weekly or daily. Skip the expensive tiers if your use is occasional, since the free and entry plans cover a lot.

Before you choose
Which plan fits
There is a free plan, an entry plan, a plus plan, two pro tiers, a business plan per seat and an enterprise plan. Models, usage limits and features such as computer use and memory vary by plan and sometimes by region. Start on a lower plan and move up only when you hit limits.

Accuracy and verification
It can write answers that sound right and are wrong. Treat it as a fast first draft. Verify numbers, legal points and anything a customer will see.
Data and privacy
Check how your data is handled. Business and enterprise plans state that business data is not used for training by default and add admin controls such as SSO. If you work with client or personal data, get your policy in order first, and be careful with GDPR.
Alternatives
Claude is strong on long documents and writing, and Gemini fits if you live in Google Workspace. Try your own real tasks in each for a week. Differences show up in your work, not in benchmarks.
