Microsoft Copilot Studio

Build and deploy AI agents for Teams, SharePoint, and custom websites using a low-code designer.

Why Microsoft Copilot Studio

Microsoft Copilot Studio is a platform for building and managing AI agents using natural language or a graphical low-code interface. Agents connect to business data through over 1,400 connectors and publish to Microsoft 365 apps, custom websites and messaging channels. It suits organisations already invested in Microsoft 365 that need internal or customer-facing agents.

Best for
Organisations already running Microsoft 365 and Azure that want internal or customer-facing AI agents built, governed and published from one low-code platform.

What it does

Microsoft Copilot Studio is a platform for building AI agents, workflows and apps without writing code. You describe what the agent should do in plain language or use the graphical designer. You then give it knowledge, tools and a place to live.

Agents can chat or speak, and they can run autonomously on tasks. They connect to your data through more than 1,500 prebuilt connectors, MCP servers and Microsoft's Work IQ. You can publish them to internal channels, social channels or a website, and combine several agents so each handles a part of a bigger process.

Why you would need it

Most companies have processes that sit between people and systems: an IT request, a contract check, a customer question that needs three lookups. The pain shows up when staff copy data between tools all day, or when a chatbot cannot do more than answer FAQs.

An agent that can read your documents and call your systems takes that routine work over. What changes is that a person only handles the exceptions.

Where it fits

Copilot Studio sits inside the Microsoft stack. Your identity (Entra ID), your SharePoint and Teams content, your Power Platform connectors and your Azure subscription feed it. It feeds Microsoft Teams, your website and the other channels where the agent answers.

It replaces a patchwork of simple chatbots and one-off scripts. It sits beside other agent builders such as Botpress, Relevance AI, Lindy and Dust.

What stands out

  • Governance. Environment controls, role-based access, audit logs that flow into Microsoft Purview and a full dev, test and production lifecycle.
  • Budget control. You can set budgets and usage limits on the credits that agents consume, per group of users.
  • Mixed automation. Deterministic workflows and agent reasoning can live in the same system.
  • Built-in evaluations, so you test agents with structured checks instead of spot checks.

My take

I would pick Copilot Studio when the company is already committed to Microsoft. The connectors, the identity and the governance come with the stack, and that is most of the value. For an IT team that has to explain every agent to a security officer, the audit and environment controls matter more than any single feature.

If you are not on Microsoft, I would look elsewhere first. The platform makes the most sense with the rest of the stack around it. Also expect a learning curve around credits, environments and licensing, and plan time for it.

Verdict

Pick Copilot Studio if you run on Microsoft 365 and Azure and need governed agents inside that world. Skip it if your stack is Google or a mix of small tools. A lighter agent builder will get you running sooner.

Before you choose

Pricing is metered

Copilot Studio is not sold per seat. You buy prepaid credit packs or pay as you go for the credits agents use, and an Azure subscription is required. Use inside Microsoft 365 Copilot is part of that licence. Before you commit, estimate how many conversations and actions your agents will run, because that drives the bill.

The trial has limits

There is a free trial, but you cannot publish agents during it. That means you can build and test, not run a live pilot. Plan the pilot on a paid or pay-as-you-go setup.

It assumes a Microsoft tenant

The best parts, such as Entra ID, Purview audit logs and Teams publishing, depend on your tenant. A team outside the Microsoft world loses most of the reasons to choose it. Compare with Botpress or Zapier Agents if you are not on Microsoft.

Governance takes setup

Environments, access roles and approvals are a strength, but someone has to own them. If nobody does, agents multiply without oversight. Decide who approves and who maintains agents before you let people build.
