How to automate Shopify
API and webhooks
Shopify documents a GraphQL Admin API for products, customers, orders and inventory, and a Storefront API for custom storefronts. Webhooks notify your app when something in a store changes, such as a new order.
Automation idea: when an order is created, push it to your accounting tool and post a message in Slack for orders above a size you choose.
MCP server
Shopify has an official Dev MCP server. It runs locally, needs no sign-in and connects an AI assistant to Shopify's developer resources, including docs and API schemas. It is built for development work.
Automation idea: connect it to Claude and ask for the GraphQL query that lists last week's orders, then run that query from a script.
No-code automation
Check whether Zapier or Make have a Shopify app before you plan a flow around it.
Automation idea: when a customer places a first order, create or update the contact in HubSpot and start a welcome sequence.
