Transactional email API
On this pageWhat it is
What it is
Transactional emails are the automatic messages your software sends because someone did something: a receipt after a purchase, a password reset, a booking confirmation or a login code. A transactional email API lets your website or app hand these messages to the tool, which delivers them. Some tools also offer SMTP, a standard connection that existing software can use with little change. Mailchimp, Brevo and Customer.io are examples of tools that list this feature.
Why it matters
These messages must arrive quickly and reliably, and they should not be mixed up with marketing emails. If a password reset sits in a promotions queue, the customer gives up. You need this if you run a web shop, a software product or a booking system that sends automatic emails. If you only send newsletters and campaigns, a normal email platform is enough.
What to check
- Is transactional sending included in your plan, or sold as a separate product with its own limits.
- Does it use separate sending infrastructure from marketing emails, so a campaign problem cannot delay receipts.
- Can you see delivery status and bounces for each individual message.
- Does it offer ready-made libraries or plugins for your platform, or does a developer need to build the connection.
