Unifies customer email, SMS, and CRM data to power segmented marketing campaigns for ecommerce brands.

Why Klaviyo

Klaviyo unifies customer data to run email, SMS and multichannel campaigns at scale. It targets ecommerce and direct-to-consumer brands that want segmented, behaviour-driven messaging. The platform excels at capturing purchase and browsing patterns to power automated flows like abandoned-cart recovery and product recommendations.

Best for
E-commerce and direct-to-consumer brands that want email, SMS and customer data in one platform to run segmented, behaviour-driven campaigns and flows from purchase and browsing history.

What it does

Klaviyo is a marketing platform for online brands. It collects customer and behaviour data from your store and uses it to send email, SMS, push, WhatsApp and other messages. You build segments from what people bought and did, then run flows such as welcome series and abandoned carts. It includes forms, templates, review management and analytics. Composer is its AI agent for building campaigns, and Customer Agent handles service questions.

Why you would need it

You need it when your store has a customer list and sends the same message to everyone. The pain is revenue left behind: abandoned carts, first-time buyers who never return and loyal customers treated like strangers.

Klaviyo ties messages to behaviour. The change is that a purchase, a view or an abandoned cart sets off the right message by itself, and you can see revenue from each flow.

Where it fits

Your store, payments and support tools feed it with data. It feeds your customers' inboxes and phones, and the results go back to your analytics. It replaces a general newsletter tool for a store that cares about purchase data.

The vendor lists over 350 integrations, including Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce, Stripe, Salesforce, HubSpot, Zendesk and Gorgias.

What stands out

  • Deep store data. Segments use purchase history and site behaviour.
  • Several channels. Email, SMS, push and WhatsApp sit on one customer profile.
  • Flows. Triggered automations such as abandoned carts and welcome series.
  • A free plan and an official MCP server. You can test with real data, and AI tools can read reports and help create campaigns.

My take

Klaviyo is the natural pick for a store where purchase behaviour should drive the messaging. Its focus is B2C commerce, so it has no deals pipeline or account view, and a pure B2B service business with long sales cycles will find a CRM like HubSpot a better fit.

Cost is the usual watch-out. Paid plans are calculator-driven and rise with your contacts, so check the actual price for your list before you migrate, and look at what each channel adds to the total. If you do not sell products, many features will sit unused. The tool pays off most when your store sends clean data and someone owns the flows.

Verdict

Pick Klaviyo when you run an online store and want behaviour-driven email and SMS. Skip it when you do not sell products online, or when a simple newsletter is enough.

Before you choose

Cost rises with your list

Paid Marketing plans are calculator-driven and depend on contacts and channels. Use the calculator with your real numbers, including SMS, before you decide. A large list can get expensive.

Built for B2C commerce

It has no deal pipeline or account-based view. If you sell to businesses with long sales cycles, a CRM such as HubSpot or ActiveCampaign fits better.

The data is the value

Klaviyo is only as good as the data your store sends it. Check your store connection and event tracking early, because wrong data means wrong segments.

Alternatives to compare

Compare Mailchimp for simpler needs, Brevo for cost and Customer.io for product-led messaging. Popup tools such as Justuno can collect sign-ups that feed Klaviyo.
