Integrations & API
On this pageWhat it is
What it is
This feature covers how a tool talks to the rest of your software. Integrations are ready-made links to other products, set up by clicking and logging in. An API, short for application programming interface, is a documented way for developers to read and write the tool's data with code. Airtable, Zapier, Klaviyo and GitHub are among the tools that offer one or both.
Why it matters
Few businesses run on a single product. If your sales tool, accounting package and email platform cannot exchange data, someone ends up retyping it, and errors follow. Ready-made integrations cover the common cases for people who do not code. An API covers the unusual ones, but needs a developer. If the tool stands alone and will stay that way, this matters less. If it feeds your wider operations, it is one of the most important things to check.
What to check
- Ask whether the API is available on the plan you would buy, since some vendors reserve it for higher tiers.
- Check the documentation to see if it is public, current and has examples.
- Find out about rate limits, which cap how much data can be moved in a given period.
- Confirm that you can export your data in full, so you are not locked in.
