What it is
Open source means the code that makes the tool work is public. Anyone can read it, and the licence usually lets you run your own copy on your own server. Cal.com, n8n and RudderStack are examples of tools that publish their code. The vendor typically also sells a hosted version, so you can pay for convenience or run it yourself.
Why it matters
It matters when you worry about being locked in, or when data must stay on servers you control, for instance because of privacy rules. It also lets an outside developer inspect or adapt the tool. It matters less when you simply want something that works without maintenance. Self-hosting means someone in your team has to install updates, keep backups and fix outages, which is real work. Open source also does not mean free: the hosted plan and some features can still cost money.
What to check
- Which licence is used, and does it allow commercial use and self-hosting?
- Are any features reserved for the paid hosted version?
- Who in your team would install updates and handle backups if you self-host?
- Can you export your data in a standard format if you leave?
