AI / LLM nodes

What it is
An AI node, sometimes called an LLM step, is a building block you drop into an automation. It sends some text or data to a language model, such as a customer email, and passes the answer to the next step. For example, a workflow can read an incoming enquiry, ask the model to label it as sales or support, and route it to the right person. Zapier, Make, n8n, Pipedream and Fillout are tools that include steps like this.
Why it matters
Plain automation follows fixed rules, which breaks down when the input is messy text. An AI step handles things such as summarising, sorting, extracting names and amounts from emails, or drafting a reply. You need it when the work involves free text. You do not need it when the data is already neat and rules are enough, and adding AI there only adds cost and unpredictability.
What to check
- Ask which models the step can use and whether you can bring your own account or must use the vendor's.
- Check how usage is charged, because each AI step can count against your plan.
- Test with a few messy real examples and see how often the answer needs correcting.
- Find out whether a person can approve the result before the workflow acts on it.
