Why Thinkific

Thinkific is a platform that provides tools for creating, managing and monetising online courses and learning products. It suits educators, creators, entrepreneurs and organisations who want to run their own online learning business with built-in student management, payment processing and community features. It handles hosting and infrastructure so creators can focus on content and student experience.

Best for
Experts, coaches and training teams who want to sell self-paced courses, cohorts or memberships under their own brand, without building or running a learning platform themselves.

What it does

Thinkific is a hosted platform for building and selling online courses. You upload lessons, quizzes and downloads, arrange them into a curriculum with a drag-and-drop builder, and Thinkific runs the student side: the course player, enrolment, checkout and the member area. The same account can also host a community, sell digital downloads and run memberships.

Why you would need it

You feel the pain when your expertise lives in calls, workshops and one-to-one advice, and you cannot sell more of it without selling more of your time. A course turns that knowledge into something that sells while you sleep. The alternative is stitching together a video host, a payment tool, a member login and an email tool. That works until the first student cannot log in and you are the support desk.

With Thinkific the pieces are already connected. Checkout, order bumps, coupons, payment plans and automatic sales tax sit in the same place as the content, so a sale grants access straight away.

Where it fits

Thinkific sits at the centre of a small education stack. Traffic comes in from your site, ads or email, and the checkout sits inside Thinkific. Afterwards, student data flows out to your CRM or email tool. Its App Store lists HubSpot, Mailchimp, Kit, Zoom, Google Analytics and Zapier, among others.

It replaces a patchwork of hosting, payment and membership tools. It does not replace your marketing site or your CRM.

What stands out

  • Selling tools are built in: one-time, subscription and payment-plan pricing, coupons, bundles, upsells, multi-currency checkout and automated sales tax and VAT.
  • Delivery formats cover self-paced courses, live cohorts with Zoom sessions, communities and memberships, so you can grow from one course to a programme without switching tools.
  • Business-to-business selling is covered on the higher plans: group orders, invoicing and seat licences for companies buying for a team.
  • There is an API and webhooks for anything the App Store does not cover.

My take

I would pick Thinkific when the course is the product and you want a clean home for it. It is a focused tool, and that is its strength. You spend your time on the teaching, not on plumbing.

What I would watch is how the plan ladder shapes your options. Live cohorts, memberships and the code editor start on the second plan. Removing Thinkific branding, B2B sales and the API start on the third. The AI teaching assistant, single sign-on, CRM integrations and learning paths with SCORM sit on the top custom plan. So your real plan depends on what you need in a year, not on what you need on day one.

Verdict

Pick Thinkific if you are an expert, coach or training team that sells courses as a core product and wants checkout, delivery and community in one place. Skip it if a course is a small side feature of a larger product, or if you want one tool that also runs your CRM and full email marketing.

Before you choose

Features sit on specific plans

Check the plan table against your roadmap before you choose. Memberships, live cohorts and bundles start on the second plan, while branding removal, B2B sales and API access start on the third. If you buy the cheapest plan and then need these, you move up. Test the trial with the exact features you plan to sell.

You rent the platform

Thinkific hosts your courses, so you live inside its design choices and roadmap. You can use your own domain, but the student experience is Thinkific's. If you want full control of the design and the flow, compare it with a custom build on Webflow or a membership tool such as Memberstack.

Marketing depth is limited

Thinkific has landing pages and email automation, but it is not a full marketing platform. Most teams still keep a separate email tool and CRM, and sync students into them. That is fine, but plan for the sync and the cost of that second tool.

Compare the alternatives

Course platforms differ in what they bundle. Kajabi leans towards an all-round business suite, Teachable and LearnWorlds are close rivals, and Podia is lighter. Pick on the delivery format you need (self-paced, cohort or community), not on the feature count.
