Granola
Why Granola
Granola is an AI notepad that transcribes Zoom, Google Meet, Teams and in-person meetings in the background, combining the transcript with your typed notes into structured summaries. It adds an AI chat to query notes across all your meetings and builds pre-meeting briefs from your calendar. Ideal for sales, product and leadership roles sitting in back-to-back meetings.
What it does
Granola is an AI notepad for meetings. It listens to the audio on your computer and transcribes in the background, so no bot joins the call. You type your own short notes, and Granola combines them with the transcript into structured notes, key points and action items.
It also builds a brief from your calendar before external meetings, lets you chat with your notes across meetings, and can draft a follow-up. It runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android.
Why you would need it
If you are in meetings all day, you face a choice. Type notes and stop listening, or listen and lose details. A day later you cannot remember who agreed to what.
Granola takes that choice away. You stay in the conversation, jot down only what matters to you, and the tool fills in the rest. The change you feel is in the follow-up: action items appear straight after the call, and you can search every conversation later.
Where it fits
Granola sits beside your calendar and video tools. It does not replace Zoom, Google Meet or Teams. It replaces handwritten notes, and for some people a recording bot such as Fireflies, Otter, Fathom or Read AI.
Notes can go on to tools such as Notion and HubSpot on higher plans, and to AI assistants through its MCP server.
What stands out
- No meeting bot, which keeps the call feeling normal for the other side.
- Notes private by default, shared only when you choose.
- Calendar-based briefs with attendee context and earlier discussions.
- An official MCP server and a public API, with plan limits.
My take
I like the approach. Many people dislike a bot joining the call, and in sales or leadership conversations that can change how openly people speak. Granola avoids that.
The trade-off is that it is personal, not a team recorder. It runs on your device, so it only captures meetings you attend. If you need a bot to record meetings nobody attends, or shared recordings for the whole company, use a bot-based tool. Also tell people you are transcribing where the law or good manners require it.
Verdict
Pick Granola when you are in back-to-back meetings and want notes without typing or a bot. Skip it when you need a team-wide recording system, or when your people do not use a laptop or phone during calls.

Plan limits matter
The free plan keeps a limited meeting history, and the richer AI models, integrations and the public API sit on the paid plans. Check whether the history limit is enough for you, because that is usually what pushes people to upgrade.

Personal tool, not a team recorder
Because it captures audio on your device, it only records meetings you join. For meetings run by others, or for a shared archive, compare bot-based tools such as Fireflies, Fathom and tl;dv.
Consent and privacy
Notes are private by default, but recording a call without a bot does not remove your duty to tell people. Decide on a standard line for your meetings, and check your company's rules about where meeting data may be processed.
Where your notes end up
Granola is not your CRM or knowledge base. If you want notes in HubSpot or Notion, check the integration options on your plan, and agree where the source of truth sits.
