What it is
Message history is how much of your past conversation the tool keeps and shows you. Some tools keep everything, while others limit what you can view to the last few months or a set number of messages, and some delete older items. For example, a team chat on a basic plan may only show recent weeks, so a decision made last year can no longer be found.
Why it matters
Chat often holds decisions, agreements and instructions that you need later, for a customer dispute, a new hire catching up or an audit. If history disappears, so does that knowledge. Short retention may suit your needs if you keep important matters elsewhere, but you should know it before relying on the tool.
What to check
- How far back can you view and search messages on your plan?
- Is older content deleted or only hidden, and can it be recovered by upgrading?
- Can you export the full history?
- Can admins set retention rules to meet your legal or company requirements?
