Direct-dial phone numbers
On this pageWhat it is
What it is
A direct dial is a phone number that reaches one person, usually a mobile or a desk line, instead of a company's main number and a receptionist. Tools with this feature show such numbers on contact records, often with a label for mobile or office and sometimes a confidence level. Apollo, Cognism, Lusha and ZoomInfo are examples of tools in this group.
Why it matters
Cold calling is hard when every call stops at a switchboard. Direct numbers let a sales rep reach a decision maker faster, which matters most for senior contacts, short sales cycles and teams that already use phone as a main channel. If you sell only by email or content, you will probably not need this. Also keep in mind that calling rules differ by country, and many European markets require checks before a business-to-business cold call. Having a number in a database does not mean you are allowed to call it.
Coverage is uneven, since a tool can be strong in North America and thin in other regions, or good for large companies and weak for small ones.
What to check
- What share of the contacts in your target market and seniority level have a direct number?
- Are mobile numbers marked as verified, and how recently?
- Does the tool check numbers against do-not-call lists in your target countries?
- How are phone numbers charged, for example as separate credits or within the plan?
