Lemon Squeezy vs Productive

Lemon Squeezy logovsProductive logo
Lemon Squeezy sells digital products and handles the tax. Productive runs an agency: projects, time, budgets and profit per client. They solve different problems, so pick by whether you sell products or time.

The verdict

If you sell software, subscriptions or downloads to customers around the world, I'd pick Lemon Squeezy. If you run an agency, consultancy or IT services firm and want to know whether a client is profitable, I'd pick Productive.

If you do both, for example an agency with a small software product, they can sit side by side because they do not overlap. Productive is not a checkout, and Lemon Squeezy has no project budgets or timesheets. I would not buy Productive for a team that only needs a task tracker. Read what Stripe's ownership means for Lemon Squeezy before you build on it.

Who each is for

Lemon Squeezy logo

Choose Lemon Squeezy if…

Pick Lemon Squeezy if you are an indie developer, small SaaS team or digital creator and you want checkout, subscriptions, licence keys and downloads without handling tax in each country yourself. The vendor says it supports customers in more than 135 countries.

The fee is a share of each sale, which includes tax work. It is for digital goods, so physical products need another tool. It also has no project or time features. The vendor's blog lists Stripe acquiring it, so ask support what changes for existing sellers before you commit.

Productive logo

Choose Productive if…

Pick Productive if you run a professional services business and your numbers sit in separate tools. It covers resource planning, project management with Gantt charts, time tracking, budgets, invoicing, expenses and revenue forecasting. Dashboards show profit by project or client.

It connects to accounting tools and to HubSpot and Slack rather than replacing them. It is priced per user, and some finance features sit on higher plans, so check the figure for your headcount. If your team is very small and a spreadsheet still works, or you only need a task tracker, it is more than you need.
