Zoom AI Companion

Why Zoom AI Companion

Zoom AI Companion is Zoom's built-in assistant that generates meeting summaries, extracts action items and creates follow-up tasks automatically. It suits any team already conducting meetings and chat inside Zoom Workplace that wants AI-powered summaries and workflow automation integrated directly, without adding a separate meeting-notes tool or external integration.

Best for
A team that already runs its meetings and chat in Zoom and wants summaries, action items and follow-up tasks without adding a separate note-taking tool.

What it does

Zoom AI Companion is the AI assistant built into Zoom. It writes meeting agendas and summaries, pulls out action items and creates follow-up tasks. It can also turn conversations into slide decks, documents and spreadsheets, and it has role-based agents for functions such as sales, IT, marketing and finance. It can search across Zoom content and connected apps such as Salesforce and Google Drive.

Zoom now brands the paid tier as ZoomMate. You may see both names.

Why you would need it

Meetings produce decisions that nobody writes down. A week later, people argue about what was agreed, and the action items live in someone's memory. Writing notes by hand pulls attention away from the conversation.

A meeting assistant records what was said, summarises it and lists the tasks. The notes exist without anyone typing them, which is the whole point.

Where it fits

It sits inside Zoom, working on meetings and chats that already happen there. No separate bot has to join the call. AI Companion features are included at no extra cost in paid Zoom Workplace plans. The paid ZoomMate tier adds more AI credits and agent features on top.

It replaces a standalone note-taker for teams that live in Zoom. It does not help for calls on other platforms.

What stands out

  • It is built into Zoom, so there is nothing extra to install or invite to a call.
  • It covers agendas, summaries, tasks and document generation in one place.
  • Role-based agents and workflows go beyond summaries.
  • There is a free tier for light use, with 3 meeting summaries and 20 AI queries each month.

What it replaces

It replaces the person who takes notes and sends the recap. It also replaces the habit of asking "what did we agree?" a week later. The summary is there when the call ends, and the tasks are listed.

It does not replace judgement. Someone still has to read the summary, fix mistakes and decide which action items are real.

My take

I would use it when the team already holds most of its calls in Zoom. The saving is the missing extra tool and the missing extra vendor. For occasional meetings, the free tier is enough to see whether you like the output.

For heavy meeting loads or for calls on other platforms, dedicated tools such as Fireflies.ai, Otter.ai, Fathom and Read AI are worth comparing.

Verdict

Pick Zoom AI Companion if Zoom is your default meeting tool and you want summaries and tasks without another vendor. Skip it if your calls happen on Microsoft Teams or elsewhere.

Before you choose

The free tier is tight

The free tier gives 3 meeting summaries and 20 AI queries each month. For someone in several meetings a day, that runs out in the first week.

Two layers of access

AI Companion features come with paid Zoom Workplace plans, and the paid ZoomMate tier adds 2,200 AI credits per user each month, agentic features and custom agents. Check which of the two you actually need.

It only works inside Zoom

Value depends on running meetings and chat through Zoom Workplace. If your team also uses Microsoft Teams or other tools, a platform-independent notetaker may fit better.

Name change can confuse

The product is now branded ZoomMate, so older articles and plan pages may use either name. Confirm what is included in the plan you are looking at.
