What it is
Official Tableau MCP Server (open source, github.com/tableau/tableau-mcp; Node.js/TypeScript SDK). Managed service at https://mcp.tableau.com on every Tableau Cloud pod, available to Tableau Cloud customers on any SKU, secured with OAuth 2.1 (per-user identity; existing permissions enforced). Not available for Tableau Server — Server customers self-host via Docker (ghcr.io/tableau/tableau-mcp:latest) or npx -y @tableau/mcp-server@latest; OAuth is the recommended auth for production. Native integrations

Tableau connects to spreadsheets, databases and cloud data sources, and it is part of the Salesforce family. Start by connecting the one source that causes the most reporting pain.

Automation idea: publish a sales dashboard from your CRM data and set a subscription so the pipeline view lands in the leadership inbox every Monday.

API and webhooks

Tableau has a documented REST API for managing content, users and permissions on Tableau Server and Tableau Cloud.

Automation idea: use the API to refresh an extract as soon as your nightly data load finishes, so dashboards never show yesterday's numbers by mistake.

MCP server

Tableau publishes an official, open-source MCP server. A hosted version is available for Tableau Cloud with OAuth sign-in, and the server also works with Tableau Server. It lets an AI assistant query data sources, explore workbooks and views, and it applies each user's existing permissions.

Automation idea: ask an assistant which regions are behind plan this quarter, and have it pull the answer from a certified data source rather than from a spreadsheet.
