How to automate Neon

Native integrations

Neon has a managed integration with Vercel that creates a database branch for each preview deployment, and GitHub Actions for branching. Use them so every pull request gets its own copy of the data. An idea: run migrations on the preview branch first, and only promote them once tests pass.

API and webhooks

Neon has a REST API and a CLI. They manage projects, branches, databases, roles, snapshots, auth, buckets and more. Use them to automate environments from scripts or CI. An idea: a nightly job that restores a branch from a snapshot and runs your test suite on it.

MCP server

Neon has an official MCP server, also available as a Claude connector. It supports OAuth or an API key, a read-only mode through a URL parameter, and tool categories so you can limit what an agent can touch. You can scope it to a single project. Neon warns that the server grants broad database management power, so review what an agent asks to do. An idea: let an assistant create a branch, test a migration on it and show you the schema diff before anything reaches production.
