Technical site audit

What it is
A technical site audit is an automated crawl of your website that checks for issues search engines care about. Typical findings include broken links, redirect chains, duplicate or missing page titles, pages blocked from indexing, slow loading and missing mobile settings. The result is a list of issues ranked by severity. Tools such as Ahrefs and SEMrush include a site audit, and the output looks like a checklist of pages to fix.
Why it matters
Technical faults are often invisible to visitors but can stop good content from being found. A page that is accidentally set to not be indexed, or a menu change that broke hundreds of internal links, can quietly cost traffic for months. An audit catches these early and gives developers a specific list instead of a vague request. It matters most for larger sites, shops and sites that change often. A small brochure site with a handful of pages seldom needs a continuous audit.
What to check
- How many pages can it crawl per project, and can it handle pages that need JavaScript to load.
- Can it run on a schedule and alert you when new issues appear.
- Does it explain how to fix each issue in plain terms, or only list it.
- Can you compare one crawl with the previous one to confirm fixes worked.
