Mobile app

What it is
A mobile app is a program you download from the Apple App Store or Google Play and run on your phone or tablet. It is different from a website that merely shrinks to fit a small screen, because it can send push notifications, use the camera, and keep working with a weak connection. Todoist, Airtable, Loom and SurveyMonkey are examples of tools that offer one.
Why it matters
A mobile app matters when the work happens away from a desk. Approving a request, capturing a document with the camera, checking a task list or replying to a customer from a site visit are all easier with one. For back-office tools that you only open at your computer, it is a nice extra rather than a need. Quality varies a lot, because some apps offer the full product while others only allow viewing.
What to check
- Check whether both iPhone and Android are covered, and whether tablets are supported.
- Ask which features are missing compared with the desktop or browser version.
- Read the recent reviews in the app stores to see how stable the app is and how often it is updated.
- Test whether notifications arrive reliably and whether the app works offline.
