Gated content

What it is
Gated content is material kept behind a barrier. Visitors see a teaser or a login page, and only get the full lesson, download or article once they have bought, subscribed or been let in. A course creator might show the first lesson free and keep the rest for paying students, or a consultant might hand out a template only after someone leaves an email address. Gumroad, Teachable, Thinkific and Memberstack are examples of tools that offer it.
Why it matters
If you sell knowledge, templates or training, access control is what turns your work into a product. Without it, anyone with the link can read or pass on everything. You need it when the content itself is what you charge for, or when you want an email address in exchange for a resource. You do not need it for free public material that exists to attract search traffic, because a barrier there only reduces reach.
What to check
- What can be gated: whole courses, single lessons, downloads and pages, or only some of these?
- Can access depend on a purchase, a subscription tier, a tag or a manual invitation?
- When a payment fails or a subscription ends, is access removed automatically?
- Can a customer share a direct file link or a login with other people, and how does the tool prevent that?
