Marketo Engage
Why Marketo Engage
Marketo Engage is Adobe's marketing automation platform for B2B teams. It runs email and nurture programmes, scores and routes leads, builds landing pages and forms, and reports on campaign results. It connects natively to Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics and Veeva, and it suits mid-size and large marketing teams with a dedicated marketing operations person.
What it does
Marketo Engage is a marketing automation platform. It keeps a database of leads and accounts, and it runs campaigns against that data: batch email, automated nurture streams, multi-step programmes, landing pages, forms and webinars. Scoring, routing and alerts pass leads to sales when they are ready.
Adobe sells it in four packages: Growth, Select, Prime and Ultimate. Adobe's feature table shows account-based marketing, advanced personalisation, analytics, attribution dashboards and sandboxes on some packages only. Adobe has also added an agentic interface and an MCP server.
Why you would need it
You feel the pain when marketing and sales argue about lead quality. Leads arrive from forms, events and ads, someone exports a spreadsheet, and nobody can say which campaign produced pipeline. Follow-up depends on who remembers.
Marketo gives you one place where every lead has a score, a source and a history. Nurture runs by rules, sales gets alerts, and reporting links campaigns to revenue. It pays off when you have enough volume and enough process that manual follow-up no longer scales.
Where it fits
It sits between your lead sources and your CRM. Forms, landing pages, events and webinars feed it. The native CRM integration passes qualified leads to Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics or Veeva and brings back deal data. It replaces a basic email tool and a pile of spreadsheets.
It is aimed at the same buyers as HubSpot marketing and ActiveCampaign, but it leans to larger, more process-heavy teams. Chili Piper can route and book meetings from Marketo forms.
What stands out
- Custom data objects and fields, listed with 10 objects and 2 million records, so the data model can follow your business.
- A native CRM integration for Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics and Veeva.
- A documented REST API with a daily quota that starts at 20,000 calls on Growth and 50,000 on the higher packages.
- An official MCP server, so AI tools can work with your Marketo instance.
My take
I would pick it when marketing operations is a real job in your company, you run Salesforce or Dynamics, and you need attribution that sales trusts. It is built for that setup and it shows.
I would not pick it for a small team that sends a newsletter and a few nurture emails. The setup, the admin and the buying process all assume a bigger organisation. Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign or HubSpot are lighter choices.
Verdict
Pick Marketo Engage if you are a B2B team with volume, a CRM it integrates with natively and someone who will own the platform. Skip it if you want to start small, self-serve and cheaply.
Notes
Your note
Before you choose
Pricing is only on request
Adobe lists the four packages and what each includes, but every package says "Get pricing". Expect a sales process and a quote based on your database and needs. Ask early what the contact volume and API limits mean for your cost.

It needs an owner
Marketo rewards a person who knows the platform. Programmes, tokens, smart campaigns and scoring models take time to set up well. If nobody owns it, it turns into an expensive email tool.
Features differ by package
Growth has a smaller user count and a lower API quota than the other packages. Account-based marketing, advanced analytics and sandboxes are listed on only some packages. Map your must-have features to a package before you sign.
Check your CRM first
The native CRM integration covers Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics and Veeva. If you run something else, you rely on the API or a connector. Compare it with HubSpot, ActiveCampaign and Mailchimp if your CRM is not on that list.
