Intercom
Why Intercom
Intercom is a customer support platform combining omnichannel messaging with an AI agent called Fin. It unifies email, chat, phone and social conversations in a shared inbox whilst providing a self-serve help centre to resolve common issues. The platform is built for support teams that want AI resolution alongside human agents.
What it does
Intercom is a customer service platform. It has a shared inbox for email, chat, phone and social conversations, ticketing, a Messenger for your site and app, a help centre and outbound messaging. Its AI agent, Fin, answers customer questions on those channels and hands over to a person with a summary when it cannot. Copilot helps your human agents with the escalations.
Why you would need it
You need this when the same questions arrive every day and your team answers each one by hand. The pain shows when support volume grows faster than headcount, and customers wait.
The change is that a good share of routine questions can be answered by the AI agent from your own help content, while people keep the conversations that need judgement. The vendor reports an average resolution rate of 76% across customers. Treat that as the vendor's figure and measure your own.
Where it fits
Intercom is the support inbox and AI resolution layer. Your help content feeds it, through its Knowledge Hub. It connects to Slack, Stripe, Salesforce, Jira, Linear, HubSpot, Shopify and WhatsApp, among others. It feeds bugs to engineering and conversations to your CRM.
It replaces a helpdesk with an AI tool bolted on, or a separate live chat widget. Fin can also run alongside another helpdesk.
What stands out
- Fin, the AI agent. It works across phone, email, chat and Slack, and learns from your team's replies.
- One inbox for humans and AI. Both work from the same customer record.
- Real-time translation. Conversations in other languages are translated for your agents.
- Tracker tickets. They help you resolve problems that affect many customers at once.
My take
The idea of paying for outcomes is clever, because you pay when the AI resolves a conversation. It also makes cost harder to predict than a flat seat price. If your question mix is simple and your help content is good, Fin could pay for itself. If your content is thin, the AI will only be as good as that content.
I would start with a trial and one channel, and measure resolved conversations and customer replies before widening it.
Verdict
Pick Intercom when you want AI resolution built into your support from the start and you are comfortable budgeting for seats plus outcomes. Skip it when you want one flat, predictable bill or a very simple helpdesk.

Notes
Your note
Before you choose
Two cost lines
Intercom is priced per seat, and the Fin AI agent is billed separately by resolved outcome. That makes forecasting harder. Estimate how many conversations Fin will resolve before you commit and review the number monthly.

Higher tiers add real cost
Workflow automation, private help centres and single sign-on sit on higher tiers. Check what you need at each tier before you pick, because the step up per seat can be large.
Quality depends on your content
Fin answers from your help content. If articles are out of date or missing, answers suffer. Budget time to write and maintain the Knowledge Hub.
Regional and data points
The hosted MCP server runs in US and EU regions only, and AU-hosted workspaces are not yet supported. Check your data region before you plan around it.
