Native time tracking

What it is
Native time tracking means you can record the time spent on work inside the project tool itself. This might be a start and stop timer on a task, or a timesheet where hours are entered by hand. Asana, ClickUp, Clockify and Monday.com are among the tools with this feature. The time is attached to the task or project, so reports can show where hours went.
Why it matters
Agencies and service firms need to know how long work really takes, to bill clients correctly and to see whether projects make money. Without built-in tracking, people use a separate app and the hours must be matched back to tasks. It matters when you bill by the hour or price fixed projects and want to learn from actuals. If you do not bill by time and do not need hour-level reports, the feature may add admin for little gain.
What to check
- Ask whether time can be tracked by a timer, entered by hand or both.
- Check whether time can be marked billable and linked to an hourly rate.
- Test whether reports can be filtered by person, client and project, and exported.
- Find out whether time tracking is included in the plan you would buy.
