Inbox placement testing
On this pageWhat it is
What it is
An inbox placement test sends a real message from your address to a set of test mailboxes at providers such as Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo, and then checks where each one landed: the main inbox, a secondary tab such as Promotions, or the spam folder. The result is a report by provider, often with hints about what caused problems. Folderly, MailReach, Warmup Inbox and Warmy.io are examples of tools that offer it.
Why it matters
Email platforms tell you a message was sent, not that anyone saw it. A campaign can show full delivery while a large part of it sits in spam. A placement test shows what is actually happening, so you can fix the problem before sending to your whole list.
It is most useful for cold outreach, newly set up domains and anyone who has seen open rates fall suddenly. For a small newsletter to an engaged list, the effort may not be needed.
Results are an indication, not a guarantee. Test mailboxes behave differently from real recipients, and placement can vary between people, so use the test as a trend over time.
What to check
- Which providers and regions does the test panel cover.
- Does the test use your real sending address, content and links, or a generic message.
- Does the report give reasons for spam placement, or only the result.
- Can you run tests on a schedule and compare results over time.
