Engagement model
Choose how you contract and pay for the work, such as hourly, fixed price, retainer or a dedicated full-time arrangement.

What it is
The engagement model is the way a vendor structures the working relationship. Common models include hourly billing, a fixed price per project, a monthly retainer for an agreed amount of work, or a dedicated person or team working only for you. For example, one vendor sells fixed-scope projects, while another places a freelancer with you part-time for several months.
Why it matters
The model decides who carries the risk. Hourly billing rewards flexibility but costs more if work drags on. Fixed price gives certainty but needs a clear scope. A retainer or dedicated arrangement suits continuous work. Picking the wrong one leads to disputes over scope or paying for idle time.
What to check
- Which models does the vendor offer, and can you switch between them?
- What notice do you need to give to pause or end the arrangement?
- How are changes in scope handled under a fixed price?
- Does the model fit how predictable your workload is?
