Customer billing portal

Provides a hosted self-service portal where customers can update payment details, change plan and download invoices without contacting you.

What it is

A customer billing portal is a page, hosted by the vendor, where your customers manage their own subscription. They can change their card, switch to another plan, see past invoices and download receipts. Stripe Billing and Recurly are examples of tools that provide one. You send customers a link, or add it to your account page.

Why it matters

Without a portal, these requests arrive by email and someone on your team has to handle each one. A portal answers common questions at any hour and cuts the time spent on admin. It also helps keep customers, because an expired card is easy to fix. It matters most with many small subscribers. It matters less when you have a handful of large accounts managed personally and invoiced by hand.

What to check

  • Which actions can customers take, and which can you switch off?
  • Can you change the branding and language?
  • Does the portal show tax details and company names correctly on invoices?
  • Does it require customers to log in, or do they use a secure link?
