Billing & invoicing

Turn tracked time into invoices or billing records for clients, using hourly rates.

What it is

Billing and invoicing in a time tool means that the hours you track can be priced and sent to clients. You set hourly rates per person, project or client, and the tool produces an invoice from the billable time, often as a PDF or through a link. Clockify and Toggl include invoicing in some form. It generally covers the invoice itself, not full accounting.

Why it matters

If time is tracked in one tool and invoices are written in another, hours are retyped and mistakes or missed billing follow. Creating invoices straight from tracked time saves effort and keeps the invoice consistent with the work. It matters for agencies, consultants and anyone billing by the hour. If you charge fixed prices, you may not need it, and a separate accounting tool is likely to handle invoices better.

What to check

  • Can you set different rates for people, projects and clients.
  • Does it handle your currency, tax and invoice numbering needs.
  • Can invoices be sent to accounting software, or only exported.
  • Does it track payment status, or only create the invoice.
