Autonomous prospecting agents

What it is
An autonomous prospecting agent is software that does the early stages of outbound sales by itself. It finds suitable companies and contacts, researches them, writes tailored messages, sends them and handles first replies, with a person stepping in only at set points. This is different from an assistant that suggests a draft and waits for a rep to click send. Outreach is listed as a tool that offers it.
Why it matters
Prospecting is repetitive and takes a large share of a salesperson's day, so handing it to an agent can free time for conversations with interested buyers. The risk is quality and reputation: an agent that sends poor or mistaken messages in your name can harm your brand and your email deliverability. This matters most for teams with a clear target market and enough volume to justify it. It is a poor fit if your sales are few, high value and relationship-driven, where each message needs judgement.
What to check
- What can the agent do without approval, and can you require a person to review messages before sending.
- Where does it get its research and contact data, and is it accurate for your market.
- Can you set limits on volume, targets and wording, and switch it off quickly.
- How are replies, opt-outs and bounces handled.
