How to automate Claude Code
Native integrations
Claude Code connects to GitHub Actions and GitLab CI/CD for code review and issue triage, to Slack for bug reports, and to Chrome for debugging live web apps. Start with one integration, such as pull request review, and add more once it works.
Automation idea: let it review every pull request and post findings as comments before a person looks.
API and webhooks
Print mode (claude -p) runs it from scripts and CI, with JSON and streaming output. The Agent SDK offers the same agent loop in Python and TypeScript. Routines can trigger on API calls or GitHub events.
Automation idea: a nightly job that runs the test suite, asks it to fix simple failures and opens a pull request.
MCP server
Claude Code is an MCP client, so you can connect Linear, Jira, Sentry, Figma or your own database. It can also run as a stdio MCP server with claude mcp serve, which lets other MCP clients use its tools.
Automation idea: connect your issue tracker so it can read a ticket, make the change and link the pull request.
Built-in automation
Hooks run commands before or after its actions, skills package repeatable workflows, and scheduled tasks and the loop command repeat work on a timer.
Automation idea: a hook that runs the formatter after every edit, and a scheduled task that audits dependencies every week.
