Freedom vs Motion

Freedom logovsMotion logo
Motion plans your tasks around your meetings and replans when things change. Freedom stops you drifting to distractions while you do the work. One decides when, the other keeps you at it.

The verdict

If your deadlines slip because meetings eat the time you thought you had, and you spend the first hour of each day replanning, I'd pick Motion. If your plan is fine but you drift into social feeds and news, I'd pick Freedom, which is also the cheaper one to try because it has a free plan and Motion does not. If you can only fix one thing, fix the one that costs you more hours. A busy founder with a messy calendar and weak focus can run both. Motion places the work, and Freedom guards the slot.

Who each is for

Freedom logo

Choose Freedom if…

Pick Freedom if planning is not your problem and concentration is. It suits founders, writers and developers who need hours of deep work on playbooks, models or customer interviews. A session starts on every signed-in device at once, from one minute up to a full day, and Locked Mode stops you cancelling early. There is a free plan, and it runs on Mac, Windows, iOS, Android and Chrome. It does not plan, track or report anything. It only blocks. Skip it if your work needs quick pop-ins to chat tools all day, because a full internet block will feel heavy.

Motion logo

Choose Motion if…

Pick Motion if you are a busy founder, operator or small team member with a heavy meeting load. It syncs with Google, Outlook and iCloud calendars, schedules tasks into the gaps by priority and duration, and warns you when a deadline is at risk. Booking links, a meeting notetaker and project tools sit in the same product. You hand it your calendar, and possibly your inbox, so check your company policy and test it on your real week for a few weeks before moving a team. If you like to plan by hand, or your calendar is quiet, a simple task app is enough.
