AI Overview
Why it matters
It cuts both ways. If the summary answers the question fully, the searcher may never visit a page, so a company can see impressions rise while clicks fall. But the pages linked inside the summary are in a prominent spot, and a visitor who does click through is often more informed and closer to a decision. Losing clicks and losing visibility are different problems.
How to apply it
- Check what your own key queries show by searching them yourself, since the Overview does not appear for every query or every user.
- In Google Search Console, look for queries where impressions climb and clicks stall. The Overview is a likely cause, though Search Console counts these appearances within ordinary web search data, so the signal is indirect.
- Answer specific questions plainly near the top of a page.
- Keep the page indexable and eligible to show a snippet. Google's own guidance is that ordinary search fundamentals apply, with no special markup required.
- Judge success by qualified visits and enquiries, not by ranking position alone.
What it is
Google introduced AI Overviews in 2024, and they now appear on many searches, mostly questions that want an explanation rather than a single fact or a brand name. A short written answer sits above the usual list, with links to the pages it drew from. Before this, Google tested a similar idea under the name Search Generative Experience.
Common mistakes
Blocking snippets to protect traffic, which also removes the page from the citation slot. Rewriting a whole site after one query changes. Treating an Overview as stable when its content and sources shift often.
